Image: Student artwork, 2018, Crafts Media: 3-D, collage, mixed materials Grade Level(s): High School Estimated Class Time: 3 to 4 weeks (15-20 class periods) Learning Statement– Students will learn the technique of book making and collage. They will also be introduced to the Steampunk style and be able to play with some of the design elements of Steampunk. Students will be making a detailed Steampunk styled collage on the front and back covers of their journals. State Benchmarks and Standards - ART.VA.I.HS.3- Demonstrate understanding of organizational principles and methods to solve specific visual arts problems. ART.VA.II.HS.4- Apply knowledge and skill to symbolize the essence of an idea. ART.VA.IV.HS.3- Analyze the correlation between art, history, and culture throughout time. Materials- Book Kits (front and back covers, 25 pages blank paper) Thin cardboard (cereal boxes work best) Large and tiny hole punches Gesso Glue Plastic stencils Cutting knives Cutting mats Scissors Various stencils metallic paints paint brushes for paint watercups paper towel Mod Podge Paint brushes for mod-podge Metals and embellishments Process- Step 1: Cut and create 4-6 “gears” per cover made out of cardboard. Students may use the large punches to make the basic circle shapes. Students will then cut or punch negative space into the circles to make them look like clock gears. They may overlap and stack the pieces to create a relief. After the gears are finished, students should glue them down onto the cardboard book covers. Students may also use corrugated cardboard to create textures on their books. *Students are only decorating one side of the front and back covers. This will allow the book covers to lay flat once assembled Step 2: Gesso layers: Students will use plastic stencils to press gesso through to create a relief texture. Gesso takes an hour or more to set so students need to be careful not to smear the gesso. *Stencils must be cleaned off well so they sit flat for the next person to use* Step 3: Paint the front and back covers, one side at a time. Students must wait for the first side of the cover to dry completely before flipping it over. The covers will have a slight bend in them, which can be bent back once they are completely dry. The levels of collage should be very evident after the paint has been applied. Step 4: Add highlight paint and distress inks. Adding a rubbed on application of a contrasting paint will highlight the raised areas only of the collage. This will help to add dimension to the book and set off the texture. Adding distressing inks around the edges will give the book a worn or aged look. Step 5: Add embellishments such as metals, rhinestones, etc. Less is more, don’t let it get too busy! Step 6: Coat the book with a light layer of mod-podge. This will seal everything and protect the book. Step 7: Bind the book and add the paper. Content and Background Information-
Collage- work of art composed of numerous materials, such as paper, newsprint, photographs, ribbons or other objects attached to a background support, such as plain paper. A collage can even be made with physical materials or electronic images, attaching them to a digital background. Originating from the French word “coller”, meaning “to glue”, the collage allows you to experiment with a wide range of materials to achieve amazing end results. Steampunk- subgenre of science fiction or speculative fiction that emphasizes anachronistic technology usually from the Victorian era. Steampunk features retro-futuristic inventions that people of the 19th century might have envisioned them. Steampunk was influenced by 19th century authors H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Mary Shelley. Patina- is a thin layer that variously forms on the surface of stone, copper, bronze and similar metals (tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes), wooden furniture (sheen produced by age, wear, and polishing), or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. Artists will sometimes apply various chemicals in order to distress or “age” the metals quicker. Gesso- a hard compound of plaster in glue, used in sculpture or as a base for gilding or painting on wood. Mod-podge- an all-in-one-glue, sealer and finisher. Relief- a method of molding, carving, or stamping in which the design stands out from the surface, to a greater (high relief) or lesser (bas-relief) extent. Composition- (layout) the way in which the parts of something are arranged or laid out. Faux- made in imitation; artificial.
